About Lyrica McTiernan

I bring 15 years’ experience helping companies launch and grow their corporate sustainability programs. I believe that business can be a key driver for positive change, and I’m passionate about building sustainability initiatives that are tailored to each company’s unique opportunities and goals.

As one of Facebook’s first sustainability hires in 2010, I was instrumental in establishing and evolving the company’s sustainability program. Over my nine years at Facebook, I built and led a team responsible for strategy, analytics, employee engagement, communications, and reporting. I was deeply involved in every aspect of the company’s approach to sustainability, from high-level strategy to in-the-weeds spreadsheet development and QA.

I joined WeWork in 2019 to lead Sustainability Partnerships and External Engagement. This included establishing the company’s approach for partnerships with the goal of maximizing positive impact through creative multi-sector collaboration. I also built the foundations for the company’s “sustainability 101” work, including materiality and an initial approach to public reporting.

In 2020, I kicked off a new chapter as an independent consultant. Leveraging my extensive experience working in-house, I’m thrilled to offer my clients a wide variety of services, informed by the lessons I’ve learned navigating the inherently complex landscape of corporate sustainability. I can serve as a trusted advisor, helping clients chart their course in the corporate sustainability world for the first time or diving deep into an area that’s new for an existing program.

Since 2020, I’ve provided three primary types of support:

  1. Extra capacity for established sustainability teams. My engagement with Salesforce is the best example of this: I worked in a semi-embedded context with the Salesforce sustainability team for almost four years on a wide range of projects including climate strategy and transition planning, thought leadership, and stakeholder engagement.

  2. Flexible supplemental support as a sub-contractor to larger consulting firms. I’ve had the pleasure of joining BSR to support their clients by conducting double materiality assessments, drafting ESG reports, reviewing draft sustainability reports, etc. I’ve managed projects for Netflix, Snap, Ceridian, and others in this capacity.

  3. Advisory services. I’ve served as a trusted advisor for many different types of clients who require unique - and sometimes evolving - support. Two specific examples:

    • Multi-stakeholder initiatives: I’ve provided strategic guidance, created materials, and co-facilitated complex multi-stakeholder engagements with diverse groups of stakeholders across multiple sectors.

    • Small and/or early-stage orgs: I’ve provided lightweight support for many smaller and/or newer companies that are just beginning their sustainability journey or just need a few specific questions answered.

I hold an MBA in Sustainable Business from Presidio Graduate School and a BA in Environmental Studies from Oberlin College. When not working, I enjoy running, rock climbing, and ultimate frisbee. I live with my family in San Francisco, California.
